Evidence-based Programs and Practices

What is an Evidence-based Program or Practice?

Approaches to prevention or treatment based in theory and that have undergone scientific evaluation. "Evidence-based" stands in contrast to approaches that are based on tradition, convention, belief, or anecdotal evidence. The desired outcomes for youth, families and communities can be predictably achieved when evidence based programs and strategies implemented, as intended, with “fidelity.”  In addition, evidence based programs can prevent problem behaviors and save tax dollars.

The Evidence is In and Well-established!

Certain Programs Work Well In:

  • Reducing Crime, Delinquency and Drug Abuse
  • Improving Outcomes – in Individuals, Families, Schools and Communities
  • Improving Public Safety
  • Reducing Recidivism, Placements and Later Incarceration
  • Significantly Reducing Costs

Placement or Prevention? Which is More Cost-effective?

The average annual cost for ONE adjudicated youth is $130,149.00. Using that figure, the Functional Family Therapy program (one example of an evidenced-based program) could provide services to more than 30 youths and their families.

In Pennsylvania, the average return on investment for evidence-based programming is $5.00 for every $1.00 invested.
